 Generally, taking courses is not sufficient to help me judge your application. At best, I may be able to write something like -- XYZ took my course and got a grade Z. Beyond this, Z has not worked with me, so I am unable to judge in further depth. This will likely not strengthen your application. Also, I will write a recommendation on this basis only if you have an A or A+ in my courses.
