How to Append Queries in Power BI

Scenario: Merging Sales Data for 2021 and 2022

In the example below, we have sales data for the years 2021 and 2022. Our goal is to combine these two tables into a single dataset.

Steps to Append Queries in Power BI

Step 1: Open Power Query Editor

Navigate to Home > Transform Data to open the Power Query Editor.

Step 2: Select the Append Queries Option

In the Home ribbon, click on the Append Queries dropdown. You will see two options:

  • Append Queries: Merges the selected tables into an existing table.
  • Append Queries as New: Creates a new table by appending the selected tables.

Step 3: Choose Tables to Append

Click Append Queries as New to open a new window.

Select the Two tables option (since we are appending two tables). If you need to append more than two tables, select the Three or more tables option.

Choose the tables to append (e.g., Sales 2021 and Sales 2022).

Click OK to proceed.

Step 4: Finalizing the Appended Table

After clicking OK, a new table will be created containing the combined data.

Rename the table (e.g., Sales Data) for better clarity.

Click Close & Apply in the Home ribbon to save the changes and load the data into Power BI.

Conclusion

Appending queries is an essential feature in Power BI that simplifies data preparation by allowing users to combine multiple datasets efficiently. Whether merging annual reports or consolidating data from different sources, this method helps create a unified dataset for analysis.
